Little Burgundy in Numbers
Once a thriving Black community, Little Burgundy today is made up of an array of different ethnic minorities. Still, it continues to embody the vibrant spirit it always had from the early 20th century.
Little Burgundy’s demographic today can be understood by a visit to the neighborhood: the streets and parks are inhabited with people of various minorities and visible ethnic backgrounds.
Over the past 100 years, the demographic of this small neighborhood in Montreal changed drastically. Once called the “Harlem of the North” in the 20th century, the current make-up is quite different. While a black minority continues to live in the neighborhood, there exists a diverse set of minorities as well.
The research and drawing explores to understand: Who are the people that make up Little Burgundy’s community today?
Research Methodology:
The quantitative research below was retrieved by extensive research into statistics databases, government documents, archival items, and academic articles. Stats Canada was mainly used for collecting data over the various years, including archived censuses from previous years. As the surveys were not all conducted in a similar way and with the same questions, the scope of the data available varies.
The key parameter studied is ethnic visible minority. When cross-referenced with historical context, one can understand the shift in Montreal’s demographic at large, as well as the demographical make-up of present-day Little Burgundy.
Key historical moments are highlighted on the graph. A closer look is also provided for the most recent surveys. The data that makes up the drawing can be understood under three headings:
